Finally the biggest sporting extravaganza has gotten underway.Today that is 08/08/08 at 08:08 PM China time the opening ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games went underway.
The glittering ceremony taking place at the Birds Nest Stadium in Beijing had 15000 performers showcasing the Chinese culture right from 5000 years ago up till now. Then came the marching contingents of the participating countries. With participation from 205 countries and 10700 athletes these are expected to be the biggest ever Olympic games.
The Indian Participation
With a contingent of 54 athletes India has a strong presence at the Games.Some prominent names include RVS Rathore,Mansher Singh,Anjali Bhagwat,Abhinav Bindra,Leander Pace,Mahesh Bhupati,Anju Bobby George and many more.
The Absence
Hockey. For the first time ever in Olympic Games India will not participate in the Hockey competitions.
Medal Hopes
Now here I will be frank and can boldly say that at this stage to expect a Gold from any of the athlete is a touch too much.Maybe we can grab up a bronze here or a silver there but to hear the Jana-Gana -Mana at the Olympics we might have to wait another 8 years.
I am not saying so because I do not support India and i whole heatedly wish that the team makes me eat my words but because most of the Indian shooters have been off-colour in the recent past.But having said this shooting is our best bet to win a medal in these Olympics. We all know what is the standard of Indian athletics so to expect a medal in Track and Field events would be to harsh on the athletes. In boxing yes we may spring up a surprise and one or two of our boxers may make it to the quarter finals. Wrestling also can be neglected since it has been a sport traditionally dominated by the Balkan States. Swimming i will be surprised if any of the swimmers are even able to come up in the top 4 in their respective heats.

Finally the Beijing Olympics has begun. It was quiet disheartening when our hockey team didn't qualify....But prominent sportsmen like Anju Bobby George,RVS Rathore,Leander Pace,Mahesh Bhupati,Sania Mirza and many more are still in race to bag some medals for our country....It'll be exiting to see the
Lee-Mahesh duo once again....I hope they won a gold medal.....My heartiest wishes are with them.....CHAK DE INDIA!!!:):)
